I am having the same network problem on 2.4.10. I do have alias eth0 3c59x in my /etc/modules.conf. The 2.4.2-2 kernel works fine but 2.4.10 fails eth0.

That is the 3com driver. Are you sure your new kernel has got that module? find /lib/modules/2.4.10-x/ -name 3c90x I might be wrong, but I think Red Hat does not package that driver anymore. Actually I think that driver is not available for the 2.4 but only for the 2.2 Kernel. Use 3c59x i.e.: alias eth0 3c59x in your modules.conf. Should work fine. Wonder how the 3c90x got in there. Did you upgrade from an older version?
