I would stick with the manual file edits, then exit Xwindows and issue the 
command:

# hostname <new_fqdn>

Xwindows gets really upset when the hostname changes underneath it. You 
might want to delete any .Xauthority files in your home directory and or 
restart things like xfs and lprng if your really want to avoid rebooting.
I tend to think it's easier to just reboot if the hostname changes.

Linuxconf is a flaming pile of... debris.
