I've got RH 7.1 on a standard high-end PC, full install. I recently (foolishly) attempted to tweak the kernel, guidebooks in hand, and managed to cause an apparently CPU-related hang when I tried to reboot. So, I popped in a recovery disk and just reinstalled w/o formatting the partitions, so I would not lose my data but would get a shiny, new, unbroken kernel. This all worked just fine, but now when I logout (from runlevel 5) the system drops the window manager and such just fine, and then hangs at the blank X Windows screen - b&w tiled background, black X pointer, nothing else. What did I do?
