It still fails under strace, it just won't exit with the error.  Or at
least not in the time I gave it.  Without strace, it exits
immediately.

I have tripwire installed, and looked very carefully through it's
output this morning, looking for some file that may have changed.  It
didn't catch anything abnormal, so I don't know what to think.

Is it possible that it's a permission problem with some of the pts
devices?  I don't know why xterm would work if that's the case...

$ ls -ld /dev/pts
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root            0 Jan 10 02:28 /dev/pts

$ ls -l /dev/pts/[0-9]
crw--w----    1 ben      tty      136,   0 Jan 11 05:51 /dev/pts/0
crw--w----    1 ben      tty      136,   1 Jan 11 05:32 /dev/pts/1

Those are xterms.
