Do you have floppy support compiled into the kernel? I'm using a generic kernel so I guess this is why I get the error. I guess because both machines don't have floppies then this is why the message is reported. I have a USB floppy, and after looking at the output of dmesg, I tried a few things and found that one laptop lets me access the floppy through /dev/sdb and the other one through /dev/sda!! I find this totally bizarre as they don't have SCSI, but at least I can access the floppy drives. Is there a way I can tell the kernel not to try and access block-major-2 for floppy drives, like in /etc/modules.conf or something?
