Tanks my friend!

i observed that after i rebooted the system and did the same operation(mt -f /dev/st0 status), the process hangs!! so i kill the process (not directly, by his parent)and then i repeat the same command.the result is the problem that i wrote.

i rebooted again and then i did a dump command   to my tape (i thought: the problem might be the "mt" command) .... the result was the same. it hung.

Intresting is the point that my linux "see" my tape because when he is starting up he gives the message:

Mar 12 13:08:09 localhost kernel: Attached scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0

My Linux version is :

# uname -a

Linux localhost.localdomain 2.4.2-2smp #1 SMP Sun Apr 8 20:21:34 EDT 2001 i686 unknown

Some clue ???

Thanks!!

Several reasons why that occurs..

first are u using a SCSI for ur tape??Might be some
problems with SCSI communication.
Did u check with a ps -ef for any mt processes
running.

Generally if any mt command crashes..u might not be
able kill process coz the crash may be at the kernel
level.Even if u do a kill, a Zombie will exist.So
restart system..Rather crude method..but if its a
kernel level crash ,u aint have an option

Anyways check hardware connections and the modules u
have installed.
