 From what I know they should be compiled in,
I downloaded the 2.4.18 from kernel.org and then used a 
linux-2.4.18-i386.config from a rawhide src kernel I downloaded (As I 
wanted to use the raw src and not any patched RH kernel, just to see what 
difference it makes)

Just curious, but:
Also if they have not been compiled in, how come root can use the 
gnome-terminal fine, but a user cannot?
