My guess (and it is just a guess) is that it has something to do with
hostname resolution (DNS).  I've had some problems with such delays on
my home LAN when using telnet, ssh, and ftp.  Do you have problems
with any of those services?

I use lpd, what do you use to print?  As a quick test, check your
printer config file (on the Linux client) and replace the hostname of
the print server with it's IP address.  If it already has the IP
address, then I don't know what the problem is.

If that fixes the delay, you might want to dig a little deeper and try
to fix the actual problem since it will crop up over and again. :)
