Hello, I have never setup a USB printer, but I do have a USB scanner and UPS. Sometimes (usually when I reboot the machine) neither one will be recognized by their drivers. The solution for me has been to unplug the offending device from the USB port (with the computer on), and plug it back in. The kernel prints a message about the port, and then I reload the driver. I don't know if this is a problem with my USB hardware, or the kernel's USB support (kernel 2.4.13-ac8). That's a pretty long shot, I guess, but maybe it'll work for you too.
