Hello, List:

My Win98 box froze up about 5 weeks ago while installing
the then newest Netscape. i evenutally had to give up
and hit the <Reset> key. That fried the Registry, and
the old backups didn't work. So, with great relief i
was _finally_ able to put rh71 into the box and hang
the Win98 directory tree as a relic.

i've had medium-poor luck at getting things configured.
My printer is an OkiPage 10e, and the driver worked
fine for it for about a week -- ending two weeks ago.
i don't remember the earliest symptoms of failure, but
the current state is that during boot, it gets to
(re-typing by hand; please forgive errors)

Starting lpd: Winbond Super-IO detection, now testing ports 3F0, 370,
250, 4E, 2E ...
   Winbond chip at EFER=0x3F0 key=0x87 devid=97 devrev=74 oldid=ff
   Winbond chip type 83977ATF
   Winbond LPT Config: cr_30=01 60, 61=0378 70=07 74=03, f0=03
   Winbond LPT Config: active=yes, io=0x0378 irq=7, dma=3
Winbond LPT Config: irqtype=pulsed low, high-Z, ECP fifo threshold=0
Winbond LPT Config: Port mode = ECP and EPP-1.9
   SMSC Super-IO detection, now testing Ports 2F0, 370 ...

and then it hangs forever. i have to <Ctrl-Alt-Del>
and then hit 'i' for interactive boot, skip starting
lpd, and get in.

For awhile, i was getting something to the effect of
(don't remember, exactly)

   Spurious 8259A interrupt: IRQ7

That lasted for about three to five reboots about a
week ago, but i didn't notice it tonight, my only
reboot since then.

When i do

   # /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd start

it hangs forever. In printconf-gui , things seem
alright, but when i try to print a test page, it
throws up a dialog-box with "There was an error trying
to print the test page." In the term window from which
i started "printconf-gui &", it shows

   Status Information:
     sending job 'root@jwest1+469' to lp0-OkiPage_10e@localhost
     connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - Connection refused
Make sure LPD server is running on the server

i'll attach a copy of the most recent dmesg and the
output of my "ifconfig-a". i would sure appreciate it
if someone could help me to get my printer working.

Thanx;

john
