go and download kernel howto on http://www.linuxdoc.org (140 ko in pdf)

the howtos are available in different formats (txt, html, pdf) and languages
you will get there the best step by step instructions to compile kernels
note that you must have installed the kernel source available on the srpms
install cds. if you don't have it, you also got to dld it on redhat ftp site

to check if the kernel source is installed, run command:
rpm -qa|grep kernel. on my 7.1 box, the result of this command is:

kernel-headers-2.4.9-34
kernel-source-2.4.9-34 (you need this one!!!!)
kernel-2.4.9-34
kernel-BOOT-2.4.9-34

when sources are installed, you can find 'em in directory /usr/src
