Well you picked the question to start the religious wars. If you have a
server and experience as to how much space would be reasonable for
various functions then multiple partitions are the thing. If your users
begin to take up too much room since they are on their own partition and
their filling it up will not affect the other activities going on. The
administrator of the server can take streps to deal with this users
problem in a partition mounted on /home. In the same way run away log
files in a /var partition can be kept from stopping server function.

But if you are a single user with a 4GB disk putting everything on one
partition and a swap partition makes more sense. If you use too much space
in your home directory it can tale space from the log directories. As long
as you keep track or where the space is being used I think you will be
happier with that arrangement.
