Since the fonts are okay for root, perhaps it is a permissions
problem. Check your font files and make sure that they are readable
(but not writable) by everyone (644 permissions). Also make sure that
their directories have 755 permissions. Actually, on my machine, the
font files have user:group root:root and mode 444.
You can look in /etc/X11/fs/config (on RH7.1 anyway) to see where your
fonts are--mine are under /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts.
