Yes /etc/fstab does have this entry. Is this normal? I have another RH7.1
box (not as up to date as the one in question) and that entry does not
exist.
What is the purpose of tmpfs and the /dev/shm?

Look in your /etc/fstab You should see something like this:

none     /dev/shm                tmpfs   defaults        0 0
