I'll suppose for now that you use ipchains, not iptables. If the firewall is set up to block some ports (as you could see from lines "DENY" or "REJECT" shown in the first column of output with the command "ipchains -L -n") then the firewall probably is set up to block your DNS servers unless it explicitly ACCEPTs source port 53 (shown as "53 -> *" in the last column from "ipchains -L -n"). You can also see if the firewall is blocking messages from your DNS servers by temporarily bringing it down and trying pinging by name.
