is your kernelversion

is distribution version

kernel 2.4.7 don't like gcc 3

you need the gcc update rpm's from redhat update ftp. not higher (
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-85))

when you need gcc 3 for any ohter reason please compile beside and set $PATH
so they are separated.
do not give path to gcc 3 to kernel up to 2.4.19
2.4.20 I did not try.

but this is my experience. maybe someone else have other experiences.
