I don't know what is signal 4, but I belive you can get it from manual of kill. I had once problems with install of previous versions of RH Linux, when the CD media was bad, and I was catching signal 11 if I remember well, and after that all install was going down, and system to reboot. I do belive it is going to be much easy for you if you try to reinstall the rpm from a trustly media, and more than this, if you compile by yourself the X server.
