Well, it turns out to be dirt-simple to replicate this functionality
using ksh and netcat. To do the equivalent of -L10000:localhost:10000,
for example, all it takes is:
$ nc -l -p 10000 |&
$ ssh myhost /usr/bin/nc localhost 10000 <&p >&p
This should be adequate for my purposes. My thanks to everyone who
