There are some system users (in /etc/passwd), and some users are
defined in PostgreSQL/PAM. I can remote login to the system users
just fine. However, when I try to login as any user defined in
PostgreSQL, sshd logs me in using the password, prints MOTD, but
never gives a shell prompt.
I would compare the output of "lsof -p [pid]" between a working session
and a non-working one. I suspect that the PAM module is leaving an
extra file descriptor open which throws a spanner into the works.

Good judgement comes with experience. Unfortunately, the experience
usually comes from bad judgement.
