Wouldn't it be fairer to say that badly implemented security is dangerous
if/when it sends passwords in plaintext, therefore allowing them to be
sniffed...

In a perfect world sniffers would be useless as password capture tools since
all secure traffic would be properly encrypted and users would pick good
passwords, making them therefore out of reach of all but the most determined
cracker.

  nmap is a scanning tool used to determine machines and services on a
network. It also does OS identification via stack finger printing.

A sniffer captures packets as they hit the Ethernet card. Sniffers are
dangerous because they can capture passwords in cleartext.
