Well, I dunno about 40-bit, I expect anybody who used such trivial
toy crypto for financial data, and got burned, got very quickly and
quietly fired and the afflicted company tried to prevent anybody
else from learning what a total moron they had previously employed.

Would it meet your needs to hear described a specific attack
successfully mounted against the standard crypto used for Automated
Teller Machines due to their use of plain (56-bit) DES?
