if you are on the receiving end e.g ( ISP) you can sniff the packets that
come through your RAS ( Remote Access Server) all you need is a tool called
sniffer pro ver 3.0.5 i think it is available for download , this will
enable you to analyse the PPP packets that come in/out via your RAS. Well
the well know risks of not encrypting data over such a medium is that you
could get a man in the middle attack or any other type of attacks , so if
you looking at making this secure you could do vpn tunneling over your dial
up connection straight to the private network, you can look into a couple of
tunneling protocols.

hope this makes any sense :)

Subject: Packet sniffing over a dialup PPP connection?

Mailer: SecurityFocus

What is required to capture packets over a dialup PPP connection? I expect
a wiretap would be needed first. Who can actually do this? What is
required to do this? How would you capture packets? Are there special
tools or software to do this over an analog phoneline? I am trying to
understand the risk of not encrypting data over a dialup PPP connection to
a private network. Any whitepapers on this subject? Regards, Brian
