A few years ago, I used Ksniffer 
(http://agentware.linux.tucows.com/kdehtml/adnload/3
1971_33503.html) which was purty neat on my KDE 
box for monitoring bandwidth/traffic for various 
protocols.  The freshmeat.net link for the author is 
NOT fresh (lol) but google searches for 'ksniffer' will 
root out the old support documents which can be 
viewed via google cache.  

It's free and pretty functional....
