You don't firewall on Solaris over Linux for performance. The Linux
kernel is more easily configured to be smaller, tighter and faster. You
choose Solaris for stability and hardware. Personally, if you're not
going to go the Nokia route, then my next best suggestion would be to
run FW-1 NG 64bit on Solaris8 on an Ultra10 or maybe SunFire280
(although the 280 solution would be for a SERIOUS firewall). Honestly
though, I'd suggest Nokia's IPSO platform over Solaris for a standalone
firewall. If you start getting into a need for clustering, HA or
absolutely NO downtime, then Solaris once again pulls ahead as the
preferred platform.

Subject: Firewalling on Solaris 8 versus Linux

Hi everyone!

can anybody give me some answers to these questions?

1. How is Firewalling on Solaris (Good/Bad)?

2. What product/software would you recommend if you wanted to run
Firewalling on a solaris box?

3. How much better would you say Firewalling would be on the latest
Linux
distributions, than Solaris 8?

Any comments will be apriciated.
