On a side note about backups, ARCServe has the nice security benefit of
being able to efficiently tunnel all backup traffic over two ports using
their remote agent. With the BackupExec solution you need to open a few
ports including NetBIOS and RPC ports. See
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/233828.htm and
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/243104.htm for details. The latter
document states that a minimum of 28 ports *must* be open (even with the
Veritas Agent)... and even then Veritas won't support the configuration!
I've worked with both products and ARCServe definitely has an advantage over
Veritas in this area if you want to backup a DMZ system to an internal
backup server across a firewall. With the client agent, ARCServe can do
everything over TCP 6050 & 6051.

I know there are many other ways to tackle backups for DMZ systems. But
also be aware that if companies have made significant investments in
production tape libraries sitting on the trusted side of the network, it's
not always so easy to convince management to shell out extra cash for
additional backup infrastructure.

Admittedly, along with Microlite BackupEdge for *ix systems, ARCServe &
Veritas are the only enterprise backup systems I've worked with. (I don't
consider Microsoft's backup as a contender here!) I'm curious to see what
all of you have found along these lines with other packages. I would hope
that other vendors follow the ARCServe train of thought.

You have several options: Veritas Backup Exec, Veritas NetBackup and CA
Arcserve 2000
All of these softwares can backup to disk and tapes. But they are more
oriented to tapes.
I hope this can help you.

Microsoft's Backup bundled with Win2K will backup to both disk and tape.

     Hello,

Does anybody know about a network backup tool which performs a
backup
on disk and tape devices? I've already searched for these kind of
softwares, such as afbackup, burt, amanda, arkeia, etc. but they write
only on tape devices or they don't support networking. I appreciate any
sugestions.
