Why not?  I was always under the impression that closing ports AND shutting down 
unknown applications was the best approach to handling unknown traffic and preventing 
break ins.  I know that with closing a port you run the risk of stopping a trusted 
application from working, but by the same token - if you trust the application you 
should KNOW what ports it uses.
