Recently setup Demarc with Snort on a Windows system. Excellent. If you look back on some of the older entries in this list you will see quite a few very happy people who have had success with Demarc and Snort on Windows. Also Snort has a retaliate option which was discussed recent enough too on the list. So certainly Snort is worth a look, you are on the right road. Unix or NT? both just as good for Snort. Take a peek at NTOP also which is a nice addition to an IDS system, in my humble opion as they say.
