After reviewing the initial feedback from people on the list and sifting
through the usual cruft from vendors and VARs offering me their security
consulting, I have come to the conclusion that there really exists a
need for some organization/group/forum for members of the education IT
field. Not just upper education like unsog. Rather the full gamut. From
the school district "Tech Guy" to the Big 10 University NOC manager. So,
now I am in the collection phase, I want to start a small mailing list
of other University/K-12/Trade school Net Admins, Security Personel
etc., and I need submissions. IF anyone out there would like to be a
part of this, I ask that they drop me an email. I would hate to invest
the time and energy into this and just see it fall to the floor with all
the other half-done projects out there. I see the breath and scope of
this group as being fairly large. Everything from effectively stopping
or "shapping" bandwidth needs, all the way down to "what to do with the
pesky CS student and his little port scanning box", along with certain
privacy and "academic freedom" issues that encompass higher education,
and of course how restrictive is too restrictive when it comes to
filtering content. These are just some topics, but it would also be nice
to have a forum for each individual establishment to share
implementations and ideas. Such as VoIP (a real cost saver for
Universities, but no real good documentation has been provided to
road-map a cutover), DHCP solutions (we all run them, but I have found
each University/Educational Institution does things a little bit
differently, and I think we can all benefit from a little insight).
These are just thoughts, if anyone does wish to be included - contact me
offlist and we'll get the ball rolling.
