Jeff,

A very comprehensive list of port assignments can be found at the Internet
Assigned Numbers Authority (www.iana.org) website. The list is at:

http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

My .02:

If you are going to block all ports on the firewall (except those that are
currently necessary), make sure you make the proper changes to your
configuration before adding software that will utilize the disabled ports. I
would keep a list on hand of exactly which ports are enabled/disabled, and I
would make this list accessible to other IT personnel.

I think he wants help with - and if I'm wrong, then I'll ask it, because
I've been looking for something like this - what each port is used for. Does
anyone know of a list or a resource that will tell me what all the ports
listed in /etc/services are for, or what uses them, or a general list of
ports and services that use them???

Clint,

You're approaching this from the wrong angle... Don't look at what ports you
should block, look at the ports you need open. Open only those that are
necessary. Close everything else.

Hi all,

I was wondering what would be a good list of ports to block at my
firewall.
I have some of the most common ones covered , however I Don't have

a lot of experience with firewalls yet.
Can someone point me to a good resource or even provide me with a
list to help me get started.

Thanks in advance

Clint Goodwin
