So you need a computer that will be used for just this - nothing else. The good news is that the computer can be puny. Personally I run it on a p3 with 128 RAM, but I know many people run it on 486's or pentium 1's with 20-48 MB ram.
You don't need to know much about linux to get it working, and you can get away with knowing less about firewalling techinques that if you go with checkpoint firewall 1 or cisco pix. You can have a protected network and a DMZ. Caution if you download the free GPL version, DON'T email them for support, and DON'T post anything to the email lists until you been on the list for a few days. In general eveyone on the list will flame you if you ask questions about something that is either A covered in the documentation somewhere or B you ask about a feature that is available in a pay version. I suggest you download the GPL version and try it out. If you like it, spend the money on what they call Corporate Server which will add some functionality and tech support.
