you can usually turn it off, of cource it depends on what you're using =P
portmap is needed for nfs, nis, and a few other big things, it's also pure 
evil, but that's another story.  If you do an "rpcinfo -p" on your machine 
and you only get:
  program vers proto   port
    100000    2   tcp    111  portmapper
    100000    2   udp    111  portmapper

then you can turn portmap off, since nothing is registered with it.
