Windows 2000 Resource Kit. It's on line on M$'s TechNet web site. It would
probably be a good start. They also have the resource kits for the other
OS's.

Subject: win2000 boot

Hi all,

I am in the process of notching up our auditing checklist and have been
trying to track down "startup" processes for win2000 pro.

I am familiar with the "basic" boot steps but would like to know the
following in as much detail as is possible... or know (a flowchart would be
ideal):

When I cold boot a machine, what are all the possible steps leading up to a
login screen being displayed. What registry settings are executed (run,
runonce...), autoexec,... anything.

I am looking for the same as a User logs in, everything and anything... if
something is getting loaded or changed, I want to be able to track down the
setting responsible for it.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good source (or sources) for this
kind of information? In anticipation of the question... yes, I have a very
good idea of what I'm getting myself into...

Thanks in advance!

Mr J Funk
