if i remember correctly you can simulate a connection from your box with "tcpdchk and tcpmatch" to see wether your host.deny and hosts.allow work. read the man on those 2 IIRC tcpdchk tell's you what is in you hosts.allow or hosts.access i think but play around with those you should get it.
