IMHO Slackware is more of a purists/minimalists distro. It wants you to 
take care of most everything without using GUI apps (defaultly). I like 
Slackware and have used it on servers before ... I have to say it seems 
to run faster than Red Hat 7.x and isn't as bleeding edge as Red Hat 
(which leads RH into some exploits or stability issues from time to time).

Like most people have said it's pretty much about prefrence. If your new 
to Linux Red Hat may be a little easier for you to get used to before 
trying out Slackware. If you have Unix experience in the past then you 
could probably dive right into Slackware and feel at home.
