I would not call that a problem. By the nature of a Switch it's a layer 2 device. There needs to exist somewhere in the network a layer 3 Router to handle the communication of packets between VLANS/subnets. While you can save some money by going with options like the 3com hardware mentioned, I would prefer to use hardware designed for specific tasks. i.e. a switch to handle my switching, and a router to handle my routing.
Just my 2 cents.. -Tim -----Original Message----- From: David Brown [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 9:38 AM To: 'Security Basics' (E-mail) Subject: FW: Best VLAN supporting Switch The problem with using a Cisco 2900 is that it supports port VLAN tagging, but does not support layer 3 switching. That means that for VLANs to intercommunicate, you must install a router which interconnects each VLAN. That adds significant cost. Layer 3 switches tends to be very costly. The most cost effective Layer 3 solution I have discovered is 3Com 3300 SuperStack 3 with the optional layer 3 module. The switches are about $1200 and the layer 3 module is $1400. You can stack up to four using a matrix module and they all inherit layer 3 functionality from the layer 3 module. This may not be the most favored equipment, but addresses the requirements of a small company environment (minimizing cost). I'd stick with that. We've deployed a 3500 node network with 200+ cisco switch's using multiple vlan's. In this case cisco is the only choice. I recommend however, that you trunk your Vlan's using dot1q instead of ISL incase you ever use non-cisco gear (or just to be industry standard compliant). - -Ethan - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Munkhbayar.B" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, May 15, 2002 7:04 PM Subject: Best VLAN supporting Switch > Hi all > > We are going to deploy VLAN on 10/100 LAN and about 200 users. > Our consideration is security. > We are now focusing on Cisco Catalyst 2900 XL. > > Is it good choice?
