Just want to thank everyone who gave suggestions on modem security, 
espcially Louis Erickson who provided not just one, but two ways to handle 
the problem.  It turned out that a firewall was not a good idea, and since 
the calls are outgoing only the simple solution was to change the modem 
initialization string to ATS0=0 so that it won't listen for incoming 
calls.  As a secondary measure I'm building a bridge rectifier assembly 
which actually filters out the ring tone on that line. (Now is that some 
nice overkill or what? *grin*)  For those of you who are interested the
