Hi

I needed some help in regard to a project I am working
On.

The project basically is about a Future Home , in
which a home user would be able to logon remotely to
the home server ( web based access probably a
webserver) and would be able to access various
controls of the home like security cameras , lights &
other appliances.he would be also be able to watch his
home remotely & set various functions/programs like be
able to set heater On/off etc.Now such a access
remotely would have to be secure as it considers
privacy & security of a home.We have to give home
users remote accesss to be able to logon remotely from
anywhere on the internet.but in order to do so we have
to first secure the access to the webserver & the home
network. Also the communication between the home user &
the server has to be encryted. We were palnning to
remotely authenticate a user via a smart card or a
biometric device like a finger print scanner

I wanted some suggestions & recommendations in regard
to the above & wanted your veiws how to practically
configure/ implement such a system.

The basic plan was to have a webserver with a user
having a HTTPS access to it, The webserver would be
protected by a firewall, but I was not sure how to
protect the home network if the webserver is
compromised, do i need to have a setting like a DMZ
or what additional precaution should i have. Also
wanted to know what application software would be
needed on the webserver & the client side in order to
be able to authenticate using a smart card or a finger
print scanner.I found some companies which had
products for the authentication using finger print
scanning on IIS but it was a UK based company & was
not able to get the approx price. By the way is there
any free ware or shareware which we could
implement?.Again If I am implementing such a system
what OS/ web server/firewall would be best or ideal in
terms of security.

Thanking You in Advance.

cheers

Ajay
