I'm not sure if anybody had mentioned this. You can encrypt your messages with PGP
products (absolutely free). It encrypts/signs your messages with your own
private/public keys.
Another thing you can do it to use TineTerm from (http://www.censoft.com/) which
connects you to a sever through SSH form which you can retrieve your mail, even
regular http sessions.
