I use GFI LANguard Network Security Scanner 3.0 to scan my IP ranges. It will give me things like the computer name, IP address, MAC address, username, OS, shares, open ports, Security Alerts, drives, processes, services, etc... (and it's free)
For extra money, you can do reports, comparisons, etc.. I think version 2.0 is totally free (you'd have to search for it though), and you can do HTML reports, which you could write a script to get the MAC address out of the HTML and compare it to a database.. but that may be the long way around.
