To all who have replied:

Thank you for your suggestions.

For those who were wondering, we have not yet decided on a platform for the servers.
We are a small financial institution and are awaiting some input from FDIC about open
source solutions Re: audit. Anyone with knowledge of this is welcome to write me
off-list (as it seems slightly off-topic).

I'm still not sure which way will best meet our policy (and I'm not saying it's a
particularly good or bad one, just that it's there) requirements. It seems the best
way really involves two servers given the restrictions. Lobbying for that change in
policy may be a better option yet--put the ball back in their court, then the burden
of timeline rests with them.

Thanks again!

Situation: My company is very restrictive on internet and email use. Only select users
are allowed external use, and fewer still have unrestricted net access. Communications
(email) with 'customer data' are not permitted outside the corporate perimter,
including the DMZ. We do not wish to have all of our users able to pop3/smtp outside
our corporate perimeter, even to the DMZ. We want an email schema as listed below:

Inside<->Inside: all users
Inside<->Outside: Only those designated by management
