Sebastian, Smartcards can contain many authentication id's. PKI client certificates can be stored on the smartcard. When the user access the system/login, a request for proof is sent. The user must provide the PKI certificate. With the use a smartcard reader (external or internal) the PKI certificate is read and the user is authenticated.
