Well folks, I finally figured it out and as it turns out it was simply
a case of having the wrong certificate. I had thought I had confirmed
use of the correct certificate, and dismissed it as a possibility
early on because the digest part of the validation was succeeding.
I appreciate all the excellent advice I received on my issue and as a
result, I have learned quite a bit more about digital signatures that
I would have, had it worked correctly the first time.
As they say: It's about the journey, not the destination.
