I am using Sun Java 1.6.0_11 on Windows XP x86-32 bit Service Pack 3 + all
current patches.
It turns out that the class was already final in 1.4.1.
Further debugging revealed that putting the xml-sec 1.4.2 jar file on the Java
endorsed path resolved the issue.
Specifically the problem was that the class
org.jcp.xml.dsig.internal.dom.DOMHMACSignatureMethod contains inner classes in
1.4.2 which are not in the version shipped in the Sun Java 1.6.0_11 rt.jar.
