If you are trying to use the SMC as root to remotely administer another machine, it may be related to this problem: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-1-2171456-1 but this shouldn't affect local logins. For local logins, the problem could be that the SMC server is not accepting remote TCP connections by default. Try opening a toolbox and explicitly selecting localhost, instead of the machine's hostname. --Glenn
