The problem you are describing has been fixed in CR 6654597 and patched in 125534-06. I recommend keeping your system up to date with the latest patches.
At this point I think that dtlogin is more reliable than gdm, so I recommend you continue to use cde-login. However, when Trusted JDS works properly in Nevada and Solaris 10 it will become the default desktop.
