As long as at least the old text-based installer allows tweaking lots of stuff (and is not so verbose as to be hopelessly slow on a graphical console), I don't much care how clueless a grade of newbie the graphical installer caters to (although I don't see clueless newbies generally as much of a value to the community, except insofar as they're on the fast track to getting a clue; mere body count doesn't mean much, IMO! ). However, I don't see why batch installs like JumpStart should change their defaults - anyone smart enough to be using JumpStart ought to be smart enough to be su'd to root far more of the time than directly logged in, such that they have no need to be running random dotfile generators as root in the first place; thus, it should be a site thing for them whether to go all newfangled about where root's home directory should be. (one could of course argue that if they can set up JumpStart, they can also change their JumpStart config, but IMO it's stupid to require that just to preserve the existing behavior) This message posted from opensolaris.org
