I am planning on setting up a system that will allow everyone to have the
same access to the services on our network as if they were in the office,
but connecting from a remote location.

The type of connectivity required would be:
1. receive an ip address from our company dhcp server

Most of your questions will involve dhcp-over-ipsec. This feature will be
present in the next MNF (not yet in the beta version)

.. but we haven't really tested this configuration. If you need all that
kind of traffic encrypted, well, you'd better have a very powerful machine
for your firewall.

I would not recommend mnf for this kind of job. You obviously need a
product tuned for vpn and scaled for a large enterprise. How many
simultaneous clients are we talking about ? 20, 5000 ? It's obviously not
the same. MNF, MNF2 is mainly a firewall and then it offers some basic
services. Vpn is one of these. Another solution is to become a beta tester, to test alot and send feedback ... and, little by little I'll make
it work for you ... it's difficult to have a generic product, easy to use,
free (most of you only download mnf and, I regret, only a few send
feedback, bugs, fixes).

As I said, I tend to encourage people who send feedback in my responses. Sincerely,

2. log onto our windows nt domain and map the drive shares associated with
their profile
3. have full ssh/telnet/ftp access to the various servers that they would
have when in the office
4. access the corporate lotus notes email server
5. (optionally) connect to the internet via the corporate proxy server
6. (optionally) print to office printers (i know, they would not be in the
office, but we have an app that prints reports from local PC's to a
particular printer that is checked regularly by a member of staff)
7. map drives from company servers over samba and nfs
8. vnc/netop access to pc's and servers
9. Allow setup of multiple vpns from various sources, e.g. remote PC's,
servers (with various OS's), customers proprietory devices, e.g. Cisco,
etc. with control over what each vpn can access on our LAN.
All the above access would need to be over a secure internet connection,
with very good authentication of clients coming in.
It would need to have very strong firewall capabilities, as i would
envisage this replacing our aging pix firewall device, and become our
company firewall.

The gateway device allowing this access would be connected to the internet
via ethernet, but also have a modem for backup to dial in.

My Linux preference is Mandrake, and we have some desktop and several
servers using it. I would therefore very much like to be able to use MNF
for this purpose. I have no experience of MNF yet, and only installed it
this week to have a quick look. I also see there is a new version in beta.

My questions are:
1. can MNF (either current, or upcoming new version) do the above well

no, in both cases

2. With the new version, will i be able to download the full version, as
with the current mnf, so i can install and test it, before purchasing a
support contract, etc. I am a Mandrake Club Silver member

yes,

3. Where can i get the current MNF pdf documentation, so i can experiment
with the current version of MNF? It does not appear to be on the CD i
downloaded.

4. When is the new version due for release?

check out the mirrors

5. Is there any point in downloading the new beta version to try the
above. It appears that most of the key components are not yet operational.

if you know that, how come you have asked the two previous questions ?

Sorry for the very long email, but this appears to be the best place to
ask these questions. If i should be asking somewhere else, let me know.

Many thanks.
Dj.

Hi Florin, Thanks for replying.

Can you tell me which of my list of requirements MNF cannot do? Can
another product be used in conjunction with MNF to fill the gap?
Basically, I'd like to be able to use MNF if possible, or maybe I'm too
ambitious and there is no product that can offer all that in one package.

I know there is a beta version available, i meant the final finished
version. Is there a scheduled release date for the final full version to
be released?

Dj.

Hi Florin,
I appreciate the info. Some feedback:

1. There would probably be 30 VPN clients, approx. It would start off
very low, probably 5, and i can envisage it increasing, but most would
not be simultaneous, maybe 10. To start, I'd only have a PC available
to me as a platform, but once the concept is proved, I can look for
funding for a more powerful device, etc.

2. I fully appreciate that you need feedback to get things to work well,
and better still, someone who will pay. I am not trying to force MNF to
work for something that it isn't designed for, so i can have a cheap
solution, (by downloading and not paying for it). My goal is to use
Mandrake products as much as i can. If it could do the job, with some
feedback and testing, I'd be happy to become a beta tester, and help
improve the product, for myself and Mandrake and ultimately everyone. I
am a Mandrake fan, i have bought the prosuite+ subscription twice, am a
club Silver member, and even bought shares, so i am eager to use their
products and see them succeed. Is becoming a beta tester simply a
matter of installing the beta version of MNF2, and posting
comments/questions via this list, or is there a formal process?

3. If you think MNF2 can be made do the above, then I'd like to give it
a try, and i'll document the process, provide feedback, etc, etc.

4. My list of requirements are not a definitive list, this is how i'd
see it working, but of course, if i could discuss what i'm trying to
achieve, there are probably better ways than mine! Basically, i look at
all the things i do on the network when in the office, and am trying to
see if i can do the same things remotely and securely.

So, for beta testing, where do I sign up??!

Dj.
