Chris, I don't totally agree with you that email is awkward for long-term complex collaboration. The technical work of the initial ebXML initiative, the ongoing work of the various UN/CEFACT work groups, the OASIS technical committes, etc. have all used email listservs to conduct their very complex and long-term standards specifications development and maintenance activites in a global environment.
I'm subscribed to not only the X12N/TG3 web board at Washington Publishing but also others and I find it wholly unsatisfactory. I do not receive messages, I do not have notification of any activity taking place, and thus I am forced to periodically try to access these various conferences, when I think of it....all with a lot of hassle, etc. trying to maintain numerous login ids and passwords. It's just a lot of hassle with not a lot of benefit and I don't see very much substantial work being accomplished. Further, the WPC web board again requires that I maintain a connection to the Net and access the web board....something that's not able to be accomplished while in airports, on airplanes, etc. Rachel Rachel Foerster Principal Rachel Foerster & Associates, Ltd. As you know, Steve Bass has implemented WebBoard for the TG3 "IG Harmonization" project and it can be made to "feel" very much like a plain listserve, but retaining its excellent archive and search capabilities. In fact, WebBoard just released a version 6 that is reportedly even more flexible... enabling it to be used as an "engine" in a customized collaborative tool. There may be better options out there, but we DO have to replace these listserves eventually. I'm seeing over 200 messages a day and nearly drowning in email! regards, Chris At 07:05 PM 7/3/02 -0500, Rachel Foerster wrote: >I disagree that a web-based forum be used rather than listservs. Not all >participants maintain an active connection to the internet, especially >since many of us travel and use airport/hotel time to review and respond >to messages.
