Hello Deborah, I have heard of several approaches to this, but the provider-patient communication model that makes the most sense to me is one in which the provider's email message contains a link to a secure, web-based message retrieval system. Of course, that system will need a reliable way to authenticate the patient, requiring the patient to have a username/password, at least. And of course, the provider's email (announcing the existence of the message) could also have a link to an "I forgot my password" function, in which the patient keys in something he/she CAN remember... and his UN/PW is auto-emailed to him/her. Until we have a universal approach to "secure email", this might be our only option.
