I have yet to see an approach to securing laptop information by encrypting the data. Most of the solutions I have dealt with involve securing the machine itself (such as two-factor authentication using dongles or other devices such as SecuriKey). I suppose the encryption process for protecting data is not as pressing as securing the device itself. (At least in the minds of managers who can see the cost of a replacement PC but don't recognize the cost of compromised data).

It is fairly easy to assess the dangers to data that is being transferred...it is more difficult to plan for the potential loss of a data carrying device.

My recommendation to our organization is that we secure the devices that contain the data. And, in so doing, we disable the ability of the information being accessed by a thief.

Subject: Laptop losses

There is an interesting article in Network computing magazine (www.nwc.com) that says claims for notebook computer losses were up 70% last year to 2,308,000.

I wonder what the losses are for PDAs like the ones that are growing in medical uses.  I think organizations that have sensitive data on laptops and PDAs need to be more aware of potential issues and not just ignore it.  Are people addressing data encryption for these devices?
